Study Finds Over 24,000 Chemicals In Bottled Water

German researchers have discovered endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), that could adversely affect development and reproduction, to be contained in 18 different bottled water products(1). Of the 24,520 suspect chemicals found to be present in bottled water, the one that showed consistent results and illustrated anti-androgenic and anti-estrogenic activity is di(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate (DEHF). Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the hormone system, they can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic disorders and as mentioned earlier,  other developmental disorders(1).

This study comes from Martin Wagner and Jorg Oehlmann of the Goethe University Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main, and Michael Schlusener and Thomas Ternes of the German Federal Institute of Hydrology. They determined that bottled water could contain serious amounts of EDCs that should be a cause from concern.

Researchers used spectrometric simulation to narrow down their findings to DEHF as the only possible EDC giving rise to harmful activity. DEHF is also known as an anti-estrogenic compound, which means that another unidentified EDC must be present in the samples that showed anti-androgenic activity.

The authors employed a sensitive in vitro bioassay to characterize the total estrogenic burden leaching from plastics, including potential mixture effects and unidentified EDCs. Using a similar approach, a series of studies reported a widespread estrogenic contamination of commercially available bottled water.  Here, we combine biological and chemical analysis to identify putative steroid receptor antagonists in bottled water. Most of the products were potently antiestrogenic and antiandrogenic in the bioassays. Nontarget high-resolution mass spectrometry pointed towards maleate and fumarate isomers as promising candidates and subsequently enabled the identification of di(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate. Because its concentration is too low to explain the observed activity, other compounds must contribute. However, further maleate/fumarate isomers are not only biologically active but structurally highly similar to phthalates. Hence, we speculate these compounds might represent a novel, so far overlooked group of EDCs. An increasing number of in vitro studies reports the presence of EDCs in bottled water. With previous studies focusing on estrogenicity, the present work provides evidence for an additional contamination with steroid receptor antagonists. We detected antiestrogens and antiandrogens in the majority of analyzed bottled water products. Moreover, the antagonist activity was very potent. An equivalent of 3.75 ml bottled water inhibited estrogen and androgen receptor by up to 60 and 90 percent. Bottled water from six different countries has been found to contain estrogenic, antiestrogenic, as well as androgenic, progestagenic, and glucocorticoid-like chemicals. This demonstrates that a popular beverage is contaminated with diverse-acting EDCs(1).

What Can You Do?

The answer is simple, don’t drink bottled water! Apart from that, you can purchase water filters that take out the chlorine and fluoride from your water if you choose, they aren’t that hard to find and if you do your research you can find some fairly inexpensive ones. I’m not saying all of them are harmful, but who would want to take that chance? It’s not uncommon for us to taste some of these chemicals within the water that come from the plastic, especially if you leave the bottle in the sun for a short period of time.

Jesus & Santa Are White – Megyn Kelly On Fox News

Fox News host Megyn Kelly on Wednesday assured children viewing her program that both Jesus Christ and Santa Claus were white men even though some liberals were trying to make them black.

In a column for Slate earlier this week, Aisha Harris wrote that she had always been confused as a child because the Santa in her home had brown skin like her, but the Santa in malls and on television was always white.

So Harris made the case “that America abandon Santa-as-fat-old-white-man” and adopt a penguin in his place.
“For one thing, making Santa Claus an animal rather than an old white male could spare millions of nonwhite kids the insecurity and shame that I remember from childhood,” she wrote.

But on Wednesday, Kelly decided that Harris had gone “off the rails” with her column.

“For all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white,” Kelly said. “But this person is just arguing that maybe we should also have a black Santa. But Santa is what he is.”

“Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn’t mean it has to change, you know?” she added. “I mean, Jesus was a white man too. He was a historical figure, that’s a verifiable fact, as is Santa — I just want the kids watching to know that.”

Contrary to Kelly’s assertions, Jesus Christ was a Jew of Mediterranean descent and not the white European figure often depicted in paintings and movies.

The Sun on Sunday, which is of course the News of the World with a different hat on, lied about me last week.

In the general scheme of things, the crumbling economy, the savaged environment, the treacherous, inept, deceitful politicians that govern us, the corrupt corporations that exploit us, it might not seem like a big deal. That's because it isn't to anyone, except me or my girlfriend. The pain, disruption and distress, that the Sun inflicted by falsely claiming that I cheated on my girlfriend, in the context of such awesome corruption, is a pale liver-spot on the back of Murdoch's glabrous claw. Still though, it's a tiny part of the demon's dermatology and as such, connected to all the other pestilence. Here's how.

Storytelling is important, whether it's a ruddy and robust town crier or Homer (I mean the Greek one but the other one counts too). The manner in which we receive information can affect us as much as the information itself. There is a certain duty that comes with being the anointed purveyor of truth. Can we trust that our media is fulfilling that duty? Who do they really serve? Everyone knows papers like the Daily Mail and the Sun can't be trusted, we've come to accept their duplicity as part of their charm, and their defence, that it's only really celebrities and people that deserve intrusion who are affected, while superficially true in this case, is actually the biggest lie of them all.

We all remember the worst lies, the ones where the red tops are caught red-handed, like Hillsborough, where the Sun enthusiastically heaped more pain on the grieving people of Liverpool by claiming that innocent fans had pissed on police and rifled through the possessions of their dead fellows under the front-page headline "The Truth". We remember the disgust we shared on learning that the News of the World hacked into the voicemail of a missing child who turned out to have been murdered. We all know too that they were said to have hacked the phones of dead British soldiers, victims of 7/7 and murdered Sarah Payne's mum. These people are not celebrities, they are only known through grave misfortune and then through calculated desecration.

British Accuse David Miranda, Glenn Greenwald's Partner, Of 'Terrorism'

WASHINGTON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - British authorities claimed the domestic partner of reporter Glenn Greenwald was involved in "terrorism" when he tried to carry documents from former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden through a London airport in August, according to police and intelligence documents.

Greenwald's partner, David Miranda, was detained and questioned for nine hours by British authorities at Heathrow on Aug. 18, when he landed there from Berlin to change planes for a flight to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

After his release and return to Rio, Miranda filed a legal action against the British government, seeking the return of materials seized from him by British authorities and a judicial review of the legality of his detention.

At a London court hearing this week for Miranda's lawsuit, a document called a "Ports Circulation Sheet" was read into the record. It was prepared by Scotland Yard - in consultation with the MI5 counterintelligence agency - and circulated to British border posts before Miranda's arrival. The precise date of the document is unclear.

"Intelligence indicates that Miranda is likely to be involved in espionage activity which has the potential to act against the interests of UK national security," according to the document.

"We assess that Miranda is knowingly carrying material the release of which would endanger people's lives," the document continued. "Additionally the disclosure, or threat of disclosure, is designed to influence a government and is made for the purpose of promoting a political or ideological cause. This therefore falls within the definition of terrorism..."

Miranda was not charged with any offense, although British authorities said in August they had opened a criminal investigation after initially examining materials they seized from him. They did not spell out the probe's objectives.

A key hearing on Miranda's legal challenge is scheduled for next week. The new details of how and why British authorities decided to act against him, including extracts from police and MI5 documents, were made public during a preparatory hearing earlier this week.

British authorities have said in court that items seized from Miranda included electronic media containing 58,000 documents from the U.S. National Security Agency and its British counterpart, Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).

Greenwald, who previously worked for Britain's Guardian newspaper, has acknowledged that Miranda was carrying material supplied by Snowden when he was detained.

In an email to Reuters, Greenwald condemned the British government for labeling his partner's actions "terrorism."

"For all the lecturing it doles out to the world about press freedoms, the UK offers virtually none...They are absolutely and explicitly equating terrorism with journalism," he said.

Separately on Friday, media disclosed details of an open letter Snowden issued to Germany from his place of exile in Russia, in which he says his revelations have helped to "address formerly concealed abuses of the public trust" and added that "speaking the truth is not a crime."

Snowden said he was counting on international support to stop Washington's "persecution" of him for revealing the scale of its worldwide phone and Internet surveillance.

Steven Aftergood, a secrecy expert with the Federation of American Scientists, said that given the nature of the material that Miranda was carrying, a harsh response by British authorities was not unexpected.

"It seems that UK authorities were attempting to seize or recover official documents, to which they arguably have a claim," Aftergood said. "The authorities' action was harsh, but not incomprehensible or obviously contrary to law."

In a separate document read into the court record, MI5, also known as the Security Service, indicated British authorities' interest in Miranda was spurred by his apparent role as a courier ferrying material from Laura Poitras, a Berlin-based filmmaker, to Greenwald, who lives with Miranda in Brazil.

"We strongly assess that Miranda is carrying items which will assist in Greenwald releasing more of the NSA and GCHQ material we judge to be in Greenwald's possession," said the document, described as a "National Security Justification" prepared for police.

"Our main objectives against David Miranda are to understand the nature of any material he is carrying, mitigate the risks to national security that this material poses," the document added.

A spokesman for the British Embassy in Washington had no comment on the court proceedings or documents.

Corruption In Argentina: The Santa Cruz Scandal

According to Transparency International, a global coalition against corruption, corruption is a major threat facing humanity. Corruption destroys lives and communities, and undermines countries and institutions. It generates popular anger that threatens to further destabilize societies and exacerbate violent conflicts.

Every year Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. The Corruption Perceptions Index of 2012 ranked Argentina as joint 102nd least corrupt, alongside Gabon and Tanzania, out of 176 countries and territories included in the index. As a comparison, Argentina’s neighbors Chile and Brazil ranked 20th and 69th respectively. The top ranked (least corrupt) countries were Denmark, Finland and New Zealand.

For the last ten years Argentina has been ruled by the Kirchner Family. Néstor Kirchner became president in May 2003 and ruled for four years until his wife, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, replaced him as president in December 2007. Néstor Kirchner died on 27 October 2010 from a heart attack.

Before becoming President Néstor Kirchner was the governor of a province named Santa Cruz for 12 years, between 1991 and 2003. Santa Cruz, located in the south of the country, is remote and sparsely populated, but rich in oil and gas. During his time in Santa Cruz, Mr. Kirchner developed a tight network of trusted friends, many he took with him to Buenos Aires when he became President where they were dubbed “the penguins”.

In 1992, Governor Néstor Kirchner and then Provincial Deputy Cristina Kirchner intensely and successfully lobbied President Carlos Menem to sell the state oil company YPF. As a reward, in 1993, the federal government paid Santa Cruz Province $654 million (US) in long-outstanding royalties owed by YPF.

Once the funds reached Santa Cruz, and changed from federal funds into provincial funds, Mr. Kirchner immediately expatriated them. Ever since then little is known about what happened to the funds.

Adrian Salbuchi, known for speaking and writing about geopolitics, international relations, political power structures and financial globalization, claims in an RT article that the funds passed through several tax havens including the Cayman Islands. In the article he also mentions that when Néstor Kirchner became President in 2003, he admitted that the funds were deposited with global mega-banks Morgan Stanley in Luxembourg, and UBS and Crédit Suisse in Switzerland; two tax havens known for their strict banking secrecy.

The only legal repercussions from the scandal took place in May 2004 when a civil lawsuit was filed against Néstor Kirchner and his helpers in a Buenos Aires District Federal Economic Crimes Court. Sadly, in July 2005 the case was closed declaring Kirchner and his helpers innocent of any wrongdoing. The decision comes as no surprise when one considers that the judge during the lawsuit was Santiago Maria Losada; Kirchner’s nephew-in-law.

In April 2013 an Argentine TV program, Periodismo Para Todos presented by Jorge Lanata, broadcasted a series concerning a businessman called Lazaro Báez in a multi-million dollar corruption scandal.

Over the last two decades Lazaro Báez has risen from an obscure bank cashier in Santa Cruz to the main public works contractor of Santa Cruz and neighboring provinces after having absorbed the competition. His vast business empire includes interests in the fields of construction, the media and oil exploitation.

Clarin, who owns the TV channel the show aired on, identifies Báez as an “intimate friend” of Nestor Kirchner. Clarin’s allegation has firm roots when the following is considered.

In 2007 Báez purchased a dozen large estates in Santa Cruz which he paid for in cash for a total of $28 million (US). It is alleged that Báez had insider information concerning the land he had purchased as the province intended to expropriate some of the land to build dams for hydroelectric plants. Coincidently, one of Báez’s companies was chosen to build the dams.

Jorge Lanata’s program showed hidden camera footage in which one of Báez ‘s associates, Leonardo Fariñas, admitted to involvement in a money laundering network that handled the proceeds from government corruption, while working for Báez ‘s contractor business.

Leonardo Fariña, working with Báez and the financier Federico Elaskar, sent some $55 million euros belonging to Baez to Switzerland. Elaskar also accused the people working with the businessman of threatening him until he sold his operation, which had been used to carry out the transfers abroad. Fariñá maintained that Néstor Kirchner knew about the operations and that he was Báez’s partner “in everything”.

Later in the TV series Mirima Quiroga, Néstor Kirchner’s private secretary and a very close aid during all his electoral campaigns until he became President, gave testimony of money laundering.

Quiroga declared that ‘bags full of money’ on a weekly basis were received at Government House in Buenos Aires and later flown by Mr. Kirchner’s personal secretary, Daniel Muñoz, to Santa Cruz to be deposited in the vaults especially constructed in the family’s mansion. The money-bag traffic was ‘once or twice’ a week and bills were not counted, “they were calculated by their weight’, according to what Muñoz told Quiroga.

So far, there has been no official reply to the allegations, but a few coarse statements from President Cristina Fernandez’s supporters who claim it is all a political ploy in an electoral year, sponsored by the Clarin media group.

If Clarin’s revelations are true and Néstor Kirchner had links with money laundering the case may revive the unresolved controversy over the source of the Kirchners’ vast personal fortune. President Cristina Fernandez’s tax office records from 2003 declared that she was worth $7 million (ARG pesos), in 2011, tax records declared she was worth $70 million pesos.

It's weird because the mainstream media dubbed the part of the outburst that happened after she was already pulled off the floor and standing near the elevators over the part where she's up at the dias podium, leaving the majority of TV viewers thinking that's what she actually said up there (even though you can hear the elevator ding as she's being pulled off the floor...obvious boo boo there, mainstream media).

Weirder still, most mainstream media sources only show the vid once she's at the podium. Check out the full video on C-SPAN where a guy says something to her, nods, THEN she gets up almost robotically and goes to the podium and as she's yelling, that guy isn't even looking up at her but it would appear he's texting somebody... mission accomplished? But to what end?
