Is Facebook Organic Reach Dead?

Have you noticed your Facebook organic reach is down recently? Are you finding that only a fraction of your fans seeing posts without the use of ads?

Translation: Screw you, pay for ads.

Whether or not you decide to continue with Facebook marketing or not, this revelation is bound to drastically change how many businesses approach social media marketing. Has Facebook Officially Jumped the Shark?

According to a report released by AdAge, Facebook has admitted to showing less and less of a business Page's posts to their fans and followers. Why? To encourage businesses to spend more money on promoted posts.

Facebook is forcing businesses to pay to play.

I've personally seen my post reach fall from a measly 8% down to a laughable 4%. Just 4% of the people who have actually liked my Page see my status updates. Oh, but Facebook is happy to take my money to supposedly allow more people to see those posts.

Anyone else have a problem with this?

When I can use Twitter and Google+ to reach more people and drive more conversation and engagement, why would I continue to use Facebook? Why would I pay Facebook for the "privilege?"

2 million Facebook, Gmail and Twitter passwords stolen in massive hack

Hackers have stolen usernames and passwords for nearly two million accounts at Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo and others, according to a report released this week.

The massive data breach was a result of keylogging software maliciously installed on an untold number of computers around the world, researchers at cybersecurity firmTrustwave said. The virus was capturing log-in credentials for key websites over the past month and sending those usernames and passwords to a server controlled by the hackers.

On Nov. 24, Trustwave researchers tracked that server, located in the Netherlands. They discovered compromised credentials for more than 93,000 websites, including:

• 318,000 Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) accounts
• 70,000 Gmail, Google+ and YouTube accounts
• 60,000 Yahoo (YHOO, Fortune 500) accounts
• 22,000 Twitter (TWTR) accounts
• 9,000 Odnoklassniki accounts (a Russian social network)
• 8,000 ADP (ADP, Fortune 500) accounts (ADP says it counted 2,400)
• 8,000 LinkedIn (LNKD)accounts

Trustwave notified these companies of the breach. They posted their findings publicly on Tuesday.

"We don't have evidence they logged into these accounts, but they probably did," said John Miller, a security research manager at Trustwave.

Facebook: Governments demanded information on 38K users, among them protesters and political activists

Facebook received about 26,000 government requests for information on about 38,000 users in the first six months of 2013, with half of the orders coming from the United States government.

The social networking service published the numbers on Monday, following the release of customer information data requests from Microsoft and Google. Facebook said government agents from 74 countries demanded information about its users, but the vast majority of these requests came from the US, the Associated Press reported.

Classified documents leaked to the Guardian newspaper recently revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) paid millions of dollars to keep tech companies – including Facebook – cooperating with the US government. US federal law allows the government to demand Facebook data without a warrant, and companies must fight such requests in secret court hearings if they deny them. Facebook provided user data in response to about 60 percent of such requests, AP reports. And out of all US government information requests, the social networking service released some data about 79 percent of the user accounts in question.

But because the US government prohibits companies from releasing exact numbers on how often they have been forced to turn over information, Facebook has been unable to specify exactly how many of the 38,000 user information requests came from the US. Facebook has announced the exact number of requests for all other countries, but simply provided a number range for the US.  

Worldwide, police and intelligence agencies have turned to Facebook to request information about government and law enforcement targets, such as activists who staged anti-government protests in Turkey. Facebook received 96 information requests for 173 Facebook users from the Turkish government in the first half of this year, but initially denied allegations that it released information about protesters. Now, the social media giant admits that it provided some information about 45 of these users.

“We fight many of these requests, pushing back when we find legal deficiencies and narrowing the scope of overly broad or vague requests,” Colin Stretch, Facebook’s general counsel company, said in a blog post. “When we are required to comply with a particular request, we frequently share only basic user information, such as name.”

Facebook spokeswoman Sarah Feinberg told AP that the information the company gave to the Turkish government revolved around users associated with child endangerment, as well as information in response to law enforcement requests.

Overall, the six countries who submitted requests for information on over 1,000 users are the US, France, Italy, India, Germany and the UK. Russia, the largest country in the world, only submitted one data request for user information throughout the six-month period.

Facebook told AP that it plans to regularly release data on user information requests it receives from government agencies.

Teen faces prison time after Facebook comment

A desperate father from Austin, Texas, is pleading for the release of his teenage son who is now facing eight years in prison for making a sarcastic comment on Facebook.

A recent report says Justin Carter was still 18 years old in February when, according to his father Jack, he got into an argument with someone over an online video game called "League of Legends.

"Someone had said something to the effect of 'Oh you're insane, you're crazy, you're messed up in the head,' to which he replied 'Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,' and the next two lines were lol and jk.," said the senior Carter.

While "LOL" is online speak for "laughing out loud" and "jk" means "just kidding," local police treated the post as a terroristic threat after they were alerted by a Canadian woman who saw the comment.

According to Justin's father, the woman alerted police about the comments after she googled his son and found an old address showing that he lived near an elementary school.

Police arrested Justin and he has been in jail since March 27, according to Jack. He's charged with making a terroristic threat and faces eight years in prison.

"These people are serious. They really want my son to go away to jail for a sarcastic comment that he made," said Carter.

Well aware that the situation comes just months after the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in December 2012, Jack thinks the response to his son's comments is over the top.

"Justin was the kind of kid who didn't read the newspaper. He didn't watch television. He wasn't aware of current events. These kids, they don't realize what they're doing. They don't understand the implications. They don't understand public space," he said.

Family and friends of Justin have since started an online petition on change.org calling for his release and a change to the investigative criteria for terroristic threat laws.

"Release Justin Carter from jail. Too many teenagers are being arrested, jailed and having their lives forever altered because of anti-terrorism laws and investigations that impede their 1st Amendment right to freedom of speech," notes the summary of the petition which as of Thursday afternoon had 700 signatures. They are hoping to get 4,300.

Justin's father is now warning everyone to be careful of what they do or say on social media.

"If I can just help one person to understand that social media is not a playground, that when you go out there into social media, when you use Facebook, when you use Twitter, when you go out there and make comments on news articles, and the things you are saying can and will be used against you," he said

This 29 year-old analyst just gave up his whole life -- his girlfriend, his job, and his home -- to blow the whistle on the US government's shocking PRISM program -- which has been reading and recording our emails, Skype messages, Facebook posts and phone calls for years.

20 Years in Prison for a Facebook Post?

A teenager from a small town outside Boston has been held without bail for weeks. He faces terrorism charges and 20 years in prison for posting rap lyrics on the internet.

Held without bail? For writing a rap song?

A search of Cam's house found no explosives, weapons, or ANY evidence that he was planning anything other than becoming the next Eminem.

Take a minute to watch the video of one of Cam's songs above, and decide for yourself whether you think he's a threat to public safety, or just a teenager speaking his mind.

After you read this kid's story, you'll think twice about what you post on Facebook. (And that's the problem.)

Meet Cameron D'Ambrosio. He's 18 and lives in a small town outside Boston. He wants to be a rapper and calls himself "Cammy Dee" in his YouTube videos.

Oh, and he's been locked up without bail for weeks-facing terrorism charges and 20 years in prison - all for something he posted on Facebook

On May 1st, Cam was skipping school and messing around on the internet. He posted some lyrics that included a vague reference to the Boston Marathon Bombing and called the Whitehouse a "federal house of horror." Soon after that he was arrested and charged with Communicating a Terrorist Threat, a felony that carries 20 years in prison.

The post contained no specific threat of violence against any person or group of people, and in the context of the rest of the lyrics and Cams' rap persona, it was clearly nothing more than a metaphor. A search of Cam's house found NO evidence that he was planning any violence, but a judge still ordered him held without bail for the next 3 months, pending trial.

Cam should be released immediately unless the D.A. can produce some additional evidence as to why he is a threat to anyone.
