Police In Thailand Lay Down Weapons - Join With Protestors

Earlier this week in Thailand, a shocking turn of events took place. Ordered to harass and block protesters, policemen instead yielded to the peaceful riot by laying down their barricades and helmets as a sign of solidarity. 

The gathering protesters explained that their goal is to destroy the political machine of former Prime Minister Thakskin Shinawatra, who is accused of widespread corruption and abuse of power. 

The present Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, is Thakskin’s sister and is seen as a puppet of her brother.

 In a move to topple the Shinawatra government, protesters planned on storming the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau. This act was devised and led by protest leader, Suthep Thaugsuban. 

But what police did instead surprised many. Their lowering of arms and joining with protesters marks a turning point in the protests and a potential shift in power. The following video shares the triumphant merging of both sides. 

It an inspirational act for law enforcement workers to take initiative and stand up for what is right. Who knows what changes could take place if other countries followed suit.

Remarkable video shows cops in display of solidarity with fellow countrymen.

According to EuroNews, Thousands of farmers, lorry drivers, pensioners and unemployed people have taken to the streets in Italy as part of a series of protests against the government and the European Union.

Demonstrators stopped train services by walking on the tracks while striking lorry drivers disrupted traffic by driving slowly and blocking roads.

A remarkable video shows Italian riot police removing their helmets in solidarity with anti-EU demonstrators in Turin who are protesting against the state of the economy, the single currency and fuel prices.

We have an obligation to every last victim of this illegal aggression because all of this carnage has been done in our name. Since World War II, 90% of the casualties of war are unarmed civilians. 1/3 of them children. Our victims have done nothing to us. From Palestine to Afghanistan to Iraq to Somalia to wherever our next target may be, their murders are not collateral damage, they are the nature of modern warfare. They don't hate us because of our freedoms. They hate us because every day we are funding and committing crimes against humanity. The so-called "war on terror" is a cover for our military aggression to gain control of the resources of western Asia.

This is sending the poor of this country to kill the poor of those Muslim countries. This is trading blood for oil. This is genocide, and to most of the world, we are the terrorists. In these times, remaining silent on our responsibility to the world and its future is criminal. And in light of our complicity in the supreme crimes against humanity in Iraq and Afghanistan, and ongoing violations of the U.N. Charter in International Law, how dare any American criticize the actions of legitimate resistance to illegal occupation.

Our so-called enemies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, our other colonies around the world, and our inner cities here at home, are struggling against the oppressive hand of empire, demanding respect for their humanity. They are labeled insurgents or terrorists for resisting rape and pillage by the white establishment, but they are our brothers and sisters in the struggle for justice. The civilians at the other end of our weapons don't have a choice, but American soldiers have choices, and while there may have been some doubt 5 years ago, today we know the truth. Our soldiers don't sacrifice for duty-honor-country, they sacrifice for Kellogg Brown & Root.

They don't fight for America, they fight for their lives and their buddies beside them, because we put them in a war zone. They're not defending our freedoms, they're laying the foundation for 14 permanent military bases to defend the freedoms of Exxon Mobil and British Petroleum.

They're not establishing democracy, they're establishing the basis for an economic occupation to continue after the military occupation has ended. Iraqi society today, thanks to American "help" is defined by house raids, death squads, check-points, detentions, curfews, blood in the streets, and constant violence. We must dare to speak out in support of the Iraqi people, who resist and endure the horrific existence we brought upon them through our bloodthirsty imperial crusade. We must dare to speak out in support of those American war-resisters, the real military heroes, who uphold their oath to defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, including those terrorist cells in Washington DC more commonly known as the Legislative, Executive & Judicial branches.

Video captures military sniper firing into a crowded pro-Morsi protest in Cairo

Warning: Video contains blood and disturbing scenes of violence

It’s not clear from the first seconds of the video who is firing or from where, but the rapid fire of the assault rifle is unmistakable. With the shots ringing so clear over the shouts of the crowd, chanting in support of deposed President Mohamed Morsi, so is the proximity. The camera jumps, some protesters step back or turn to run. In only a few shorts seconds – so short, he must have been awfully close – three men carry a fourth back through the crowd, limp and covered in blood.

Then, at 50 seconds into the video, embedded below, the cameraman pans up to see a soldier in military camouflage peering over the top of a building. The soldier aims carefully before each shot – fired, it’s not clear at whom, somewhere into the crowd. More bleeding young men are carried away.

It’s difficult to know for sure the exact provenance and timing of this video, which has circulated widely in and outside of Egypt since military troops opened fire on pro-Morsi protesters this morning, killing at least 40 and injuring 300. It’s purportedly taken from outside Cairo’s Republican Guard headquarters, where Morsi’s supporters believe he is being held and where Monday morning’s violence took place. Separate BBC footage appears to show clashes and a body bag loaded into the back of an ambulance, although it’s not clear if this is from the same incident.

A military spokesman says the troops were defending against armed Morsi supporters; the protesters say soldiers shot at them from rooftops and behind barricades without warning. The video does not definitively prove either of their stories – it is far too narrow and bereft of context to tell us the broader story of what happened – but it is a disturbing moment.

The video was clearly taken during the day; Monday’s shooting mostly occurred during or before dawn. Wall Street Journal report Tamer El-Ghobashy says that several witnesses told him the episode continued until about 8 AM, by which time Cairo is quite sunny.

Washington Post correspondent William Booth visited the Republican Guard headquarters later in the day, where he found protesters and troops still gathered. Here are a few of his photos from the scene, some of which appear consistent with the buildings in the above video:

Tear gas, water cannon in Gezi Park and Taksim after Erdogan’s ultimatum

The police have fired water cannon and tear gas to drive away protesters from both Istanbul’s Taksim Square and Gezi Park, hours after Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan demanded the square to be “evacuated.” Protesters claim multiple injuries.

Several people have been taken away in ambulances after being loaded onto stretchers, RT’s Irina Galushko reports from Istanbul.

The police are now tearing down the tents in Gezi Park camp, she added.

Scores of riot police have sealed off Taksim Square and stormed the adjoining park, pressing the protesters out of the area.

Water cannon were used to keep the people off the square in the surrounding streets. Even ambulance workers, as well as reporters, have been denied access to Gezi Park, RT’s Galushko tweets.
