  1. It is because you are focusing on the mid part of the picture.. We have two eyes and the focusing limit of our eyes are limited to only 1 AREA.. the tendency of both of our eyes is when we see an alteration the other eye adapts to that change, so if we are looking at the middle and the left and right portion are interchanging every split second, then that could alter our vision and thus we see the faces on those portions are like mixed together and altered.

    2. Hi Kevin -- Actually it must not depend on how many eyes we have (check by closing your non-dominant eye), however it shall provide some insight how the peripherical vision works in our brain. I lost a bit of trust in mine...

    3. However, even if I focus on the portraits (e.g. on the right side) it takes a while when I got the conclusion that it is well within the "normal" range. Just because they are sometimes so much different. Maybe the peripheral vision is not that fast in recognition but still have some ability...

  3. It's actually because the brain takes 'short cuts' in visual processing because neural fuction is metabolically costly. One of the short cuts is to exaggerate human features, like eyes ears etc. We naturally do this and see each part of the face separately, all those parts are then combined in the fusiform facial area which is part of the visual cortex. So when we are not focusing on the faces, the brain applies these short cut techniques to an even greater extent, which ends up causing distortion of the image

    1. Good answer, though more discussion of the techniques would be great!

Eg, I suppose the changing of images creates more visual processing burden, thereby enhancing the effect.

But is there any significance to the series in which the images are displayed?

Eg, radically changing features, big blue eyes, then small brown, etc

Any continuity, OTOH, than needs to be maintained?

Any 'memory' action involved in switching people in left/right?

      Thanks!

    2. Cognitive dissonance is what oyu are both experiencing as with many others that causes you to need to justify what your own brain is telling you.

That the truth is we are not just ONE "race" of "humans" and that there is a lot of races living here as the human race.
