Sun’s field will ‘flip upside down’ within weeks, says Nasa

(TheIndependent.co.uk) The sun is set to “flip upside down” within weeks as its magnetic field reverses polarity in an event that will send ripple effects throughout the solar system.
Although it may sound like a catastrophic occurrence, there’s no need to run for cover. The sun switches its polarity, flipping its magnetic north and south, once every eleven years through an internal mechanism about which little is understood.
The swap could however cause intergalactic weather fronts such as geomagnetic storms, which can interfere with satellites and cause radio blackouts.Nasa said in August that the change would happen in three to four months time, but it is impossible to give a more specific date. Scientist won’t know for around another three weeks whether the flip is complete. The impact of the transfer will be widespread as the sun’s magnetic field exerts influence well beyond Pluto, past Nasa’s Voyager probes positioned near the edge of interstellar space. The event will be watched closely by researchers at Stanford University’s Wilcox Solar Observatory, which monitors the sun’s magnetic field on a daily basis. Todd Hoeksema, director of the Wilcox Solar Observatory, said the polarity change is built up throughout the eleven year cycle through areas of intense magnetic activity known as sunspots which gradually move towards the poles, eroding the existing opposite polarity.Eventually, the magnetic field reduces to zero, before rebounding with the opposite polarity.
“It’s kind of like a tide coming in or going out,” Hoeksema said. “Each little wave brings a little more water in, and eventually you get to the full reversal.”

FLIPS IN THE SUN’S MAGNETIC FIELD CAUSE PROFOUND SHIFTS IN HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

By: Michael Forrester, Guest
We are currently in the middle of a peak or solar maximum which has brought us more solar flares, CMEs, and geomagnetic storms. Historically, research has been conducted to link the 11 year cycle of the sun to changes in human behavior and society. A big event is about to happen on the sun which may assist in this process–the sun’s vast magnetic field is about to flip in just a few months. The sun is a major source of visible light and energy on this planet. It represents all-pervading consciousness which animates all things providing us with what some believe to be unlimited energy. According to measurements from NASA-supported observatories, the sun’s vast magnetic field is about to flip. What are the cosmic and personal implications of this? It is not such a unique phenomenon, as it happens every eleven years. Still, every eleven years, shifts in human consciousness around this period seem to occur like clock work.
It happens at the peak of each solar cycle as the sun’s inner magnetic dynamo re-organizes itself. The coming reversal will mark the midpoint of Solar Cycle 24. Half of ‘Solar Max’ will be behind us, with half yet to come.
“It looks like we’re no more than 3 to 4 weeks away from a complete field reversal,” says solar physicist Todd Hoeksema of Stanford University. ”This change will have ripple effects throughout the solar system.”

Hoeksema is the director of Stanford’s Wilcox Solar Observatory, one of the few observatories in the world that monitor the sun’s polar magnetic fields. The poles are a herald of change. Just as Earth scientists watch our planet’s polar regions for signs of climate change, solar physicists do the same thing for the sun. Magnetograms at Wilcox have been tracking the sun’s polar magnetism since 1976, and they have recorded three grand reversals–with a fourth in the offing.
A reversal of the sun’s magnetic field is, literally, a big event. The domain of the sun’s magnetic influence (also known as the “heliosphere”) extends billions of kilometers beyond Pluto. Changes to the field’s polarity ripple all the way out to the Voyager probes, on the doorstep of interstellar space.
When solar physicists talk about solar field reversals, their conversation often centers on the “current sheet.” The current sheet is a sprawling surface jutting outward from the sun’s equator where the sun’s slowly-rotating magnetic field induces an electrical current. The current itself is small, only one ten-billionth of an amp per square meter (0.0000000001 amps/m2), but there’s a lot of it: the amperage flows through a region 10,000 km thick and billions of kilometers wide. Electrically speaking, the entire heliosphere is organized around this enormous sheet.
Cosmic rays are also affected. These are high-energy particles accelerated to nearly light speed by supernova explosions and other violent events in the galaxy.
The sun recently unleashed three X-class solar flares which were the strongest flares of the year so far. They signaled a significant increase in solar storms now supported by continued activity.

MAXIMUM SUNSPOT ACTIVITY CORRELATES WITH MASS HUMAN EXCITABILITY

Historically, research has been conducted to link the 11 year cycle of the sun to changes in human behavior and society. The most famous research was been done by professor A.L. Tchijevsky, a Russian scientist, who presented a paper to the American Meteorological Society at Philadelphia in the late 19th century. He prepared a study of the history of mass human movement compared to the solar cycle, beginning with the division of the Solar cycle into four parts: 1) Minimum sunspot activity; 2) increasing sunspot activity; 3) maximum sunspot activity; 4) Decreasing sunspot activity. He then divided up the agitation of mass human movements into five phases:
1) provoking influence of leaders upon masses
2) the “exciting” effect of emphasized ideas upon the masses
3) the velocity of incitability due to the presence of a single psychic center
4) the extensive areas covered by mass movements
5) Integration and individualization of the masses
By these comparisons he constructed an “Index of Mass Human Excitability” covering each year from 500 B.C. to 1922 A.D. He investigated the histories of 72 countries in that period, noting signs of human unrest such as wars, revolutions, riots, expeditions and migrations, plus the number of humans involved. Tchijevsky found that fully 80% of the most significant events occurred during the years of maximum sunspot activity. He maintained that the “exciting” period may be explained by an acute change in the nervous and psychic character of humanity, which takes place at sunspot maxima.
Tchijevsky discovered that the solar minimum is the lag period when repression is tolerated by the masses, as if they lacked the vital energy to make the needed changes. He found that during the sunspot maximum, the movement of humans is also at its peak. Tchijevsky’s study is the foundation of sunspot theory on human behavior, and as Harlan True Stetson, in his book Sunspots and Their Effects, stated, “Until, however, someone can arrive at a more convincing excitability quotient for mass movements than professor Tchijevsky appears yet to have done, scientists will be reluctant to subscribe to all the conclusions which he sets forth.” Stetson did acknowledge that the mechanism by which ultraviolet radiation is absorbed was still a puzzle biologists had to solve.

Many animals can sense the Earth’s magnetic field
, so why not people, asks Oleg Shumilov of the Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems in Russia.
Shumilov looked at activity in the Earth’s geomagnetic field from 1948 to 1997 and found that it grouped into three seasonal peaks every year: one from March to May, another in July and the last in October.
Surprisingly, he also found that the geomagnetism peaks matched up with peaks in the number of suicides in the northern Russian city of Kirovsk over the same period.
Shumilov acknowledges that a correlation like this does not necessarily mean there is a causal link, but he points out that there have been several other studies suggesting a link between human health and geomagnetism.
For example, a 2006 review of research on cardiovascular health and disturbances in the geomagnetic field in the journal Surveys in Geophysics (DOI: 10.1007/s10712-006-9010-7) concluded that a link was possible and that the effects seemed to be more pronounced at high latitudes.

TWINNED PEAKS

The review’s author, Michael Rycroft, formerly head of the European Geosciences Society, says that geomagnetic health problems affect 10 to 15% of the population.
“Others have found similar things [to Shumilov's results] in independent sets of data,” says Rycroft. “It suggests something may be linking the two factors.”
A 2006 Australian study, for example, also found a correlation between peaks in suicide numbers and geomagnetic activity (Bioelectromagnetics, vol. 27 p 155).

BRAIN STORMS

Psychiatrists too have noticed a correlation between geomagnetic activity and suicide rates. A review of 13 years of South African data on suicides and magnetic storms in South African Psychiatry Review, vol. 6 p. 24) suggested a link.
Geomagnetic storms – periods of high geomagnetic activity caused by large solar flares – have also been linked to clinical depression.
In 1994, a study was published suggesting a 36.2% increase in the number of men admitted into hospital for depression in the second week after geomagnetic storms (British Journal of Psychiatry vol 164, p 403).
What may be the cause of the link, if there is one, remains unknown. “The intriguing correlation between geomagnetism and suicide justifies more research into its mechanism,” says Rycroft.

ENVIRONMENTAL CUE?

“The most plausible explanation for the association between geomagnetic activity and depression and suicide is that geomagnetic storms can desynchronise circadian rhythms and melatonin production,” says Kelly Posner, a psychiatrist at Columbia University in the US.
The pineal gland, which regulates circadian rhythm and melatonin production, is sensitive to magnetic fields. “The circadian regulatory system depends upon repeated environmental cues to [synchronise] internal clocks,” says Posner. “Magnetic fields may be one of these environmental cues.”
Geomagnetic storms could disrupt body clocks, precipitating seasonal affective disorder and therefore increase suicide risk, Posner stated.
There seems little doubt that the brain responds to electromagnetic fields – coils that generate electromagnetic fields can trigger muscular twitches when placed over a person’s skull.
However, Shumilov, who was presenting his data at the European Geoscience Union (EGU) annual meeting in Vienna, Austria, last week, does not believe geomagnetic activity influences everyone equally.

SUICIDE STATISTICS

He also presented hospital data from 6000 pregnant women who had routine scans of their fetus’s heart rates between 1995 and 2003. In 15% of the fetuses, periods of disturbances in their heart rates coincided with periods of high geomagnetic activity.
Shumilov accepts that light levels in northern countries can influence depression, but believes that geomagnetism may be another factor, and one that is under-appreciated.
The trouble with studying the causes of suicide is that it is a rare condition, says Klaus Ebmeier, a psychiatrist at the University of Oxford. “You are bound to get spurious effects. A study of the causes would have to enrol a country’s entire population.”
Cosmo Hallstrom, a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, agrees. “You have to be very careful with suicide statistics,” he says. “Countries report them differently. Catholic countries are very reluctant to diagnose suicide. Scandinavian countries consider it a social injustice not to.”

PHOTONIC ENERGY INEVITABLY AFFECTS CONSCIOUSNESS AND INFLUENCES OUR HEALTH

While the mechanism behind the stimulation of human behavior is still a mystery, many are now accepting that humanity is receiving the highest support from the consciousness of the cosmos, allowing us to wake up to our magnificence and divine connection to each other and the universe. The Sun is only assisting in this inevitable process.
It will be traumatic for many when those revelations of why human consciousness if shifting at the same time major changes are being introduced. Knowing that all of the confusion and turmoil is heralding Earth’s exit from third density, how will we be prepared to weather the coming months and to help those who are foundering.
The interesting fact about this energy is that since it is of a higher frequency it creates the power of instant manifestation of our thoughts, which means whatever we think, we create instantly. This never before happened in our lifetime and that is why many people are writing books on the subject on the Power of Attraction.
Photonic energy connects to our thoughts so it is important that we know what we want, rather than we don’t want, otherwise, we will manifest more of what we don’t want. If you are in the process of change and transformation this energy works well for you. On the other hand, if you are stuck in the past through victimization and anger, you will simply manifest more reasons to remain stuck in victimization until you are ready to release it.There is some Russian research that shows an increase in cardiac problems during sunspot maxima. The solar activity probably sets off a preexisting condition and no one is suggesting that people will drop dead in the streets. We could see the stress of solar activity on the biology of living things as an evolutionary agent weeding out the old and sick and strengthening those who can resonate with its radiations. There will also be an increased frequency of deaths worldwide following the solar maxima. These may take place through accidents, illness and other factors which will be attributed to chance, however most of these deaths will be related to an acceleration of consciousness and self-imposed termination for those not willing or ready to experience a fourth dimensional experience.
Professor d’Arsonval gives several examples of research done in the last hundred years that shows the most malefic effects from solar activity come at the sunspot minima. He notes from the British Medical Journal, March 7th & 14th of 1936 that both Colonel C.A. Gill and Dr. Conyers Morrel found increases in pandemics of deadly diseases during the period of minimal sunspot activity. In Gill’s study he showed that every pandemic of malaria since sunspot records were taken had occurred when sunspot numbers were lowest. Similar trends were observed in East Africa and elsewhere with Yellow fever epidemics since 1800 occur during the sunspot minima. Dr. Conyers Morrel also finds that, “…waves of epidemic diseases covering considerable periods exhibit a very close correspondence with the phases of sunspot periods. Diphtheria, Typhus, and Dysentery seemed to prosper when there was an absence of solar activity. We also see an increase in disease in Solco W. Tromp’s study. Without the stimulation from the Sun human health seems to diminish. The immune system seems to grow unresponsive during the solar lull and diseases can more easily gain a foothold in the body. Not only human health but Life itself seems hampered by the lack of solar activity. William Hershel wrote in 1801, “It seems probable analyzing the period between 1650 and 1713, and judging by the normal yields of wheat, that a scarcity of vegetation occurred whenever the sun appeared to be free from spots.” The depressed state of metabolism and lack of food in agricultural centers may have seemed very inviting to the Mongols. Goncharov, in an abstract on the “Asian Nomadic Invasions and Solar Cycles”, aid, “From the 4th to the 16th centuries the Central Asian Steepe was the cradle of the series of great nomadic tribal invasions into agricultural regions of Europe, China, and South Asia. Those invasions had similar features. They arose in middle latitudes and recurred every 160-220 years — exactly after solar abatements.”What we will be experiencing in 2013 and 2014 more than anything else is a constant upgrade to our current belief systems, collective consciousness and awareness of earth’s true history from the constant bombardment of solar activity. There will be no more major wars but a shift with no central ideology. This ideology will grow and spread worldwide with no exception. The shared understanding is arising from different economic sectors, cultures and regions. Our economic landscape will change, and although a planned one-world currency will be enacted, we will quickly dismiss this new system within a short period of time and move toward non-monetary systems. All these information packets from the Sun will make us feel like we need to find a new center of truth. As galactic connections have increased around the 2012 summer solstice and then again for the universal collective around the 2012 winter solstice, we must all listen intently to our intuition and trust it. Each solstice in 2013 and 2014 will represent new elevated levels if awareness. If it doesn’t feel right, switch over to something that does. It’s that simple.References:

Map Shows Which Countries Are Running Out Of Water

This Map Shows Which Countries Are Running Out Of Water

The World Resources Institute found that 37 countries face “extremely high levels” of baseline water stress, in the first such country-level water assessment of its kind, according to the global research organization.
The assessment, published Thursday, evaluated, mapped and scored water risks in 100 river basins, ranked by area and population in 181 countries. The study provides information relevant for a country’s economy, environment and community.
Countries received a score of 0-5 for each indicator — the higher the score, the greater the exposure to that specific water risk.
Scores above four indicate that, for the average water user, more than 80 percent of the water available is withdrawn annually. “That means companies, farms, and residents are highly dependent on limited amounts of water and vulnerable to even the slightest change in supply,” Paul Reig, the author of the study, said on the organization's website.
Singapore, for example, has the highest water stress ranking, of 5.0. The South-East Asian country is densely populated and has no freshwater lakes or aquifers and its demand for water far exceeds its supply.

New Wind Tower Generates 600% More Electrical Energy Than Traditional Wind Turbines

New Wind Tower Generates 600% More Electrical Energy Than Traditional Wind Turbines

The Sheerwind wind turbine promises to produce 6 times the electrical power than traditional wind turbines.
This funny looking wind tower acts like a funnel, directing the wind from any angle, down through a tube to a ground based turbine generator. The funneling of the wind through a narrow passage effectively creates a “jet effect” increasing the velocity of the wind, while lowering the pressure. This is called the Venturi Effect. This speeds up the wind turbine mounted inside the narrowest portion and generates electricity.
As such it can capture and generate electricity at a much lower wind speed than current wind power technologies.
The idea is so simple, so elegant, and promises to produce so much more energy at lower cost and more efficiently, that it might just be the answer to many problems with current wind turbine technology. Aside from the lower capital investment to get started, and increased efficiency and power generation, it also might be a solution to the ever growing problem of birds (and bats) being killed by traditional wind farms. (Yes, that is a problem)
This technology is not really new in the science of fluid dynamics, however this is a new way to generate electricity, and if successful, promises to grow the wind energy in a more eco-friendly way than ever thought possible.
Imagine a smaller HOME version on your off grid cabin. Now THAT is cool off grid tech!

Conventional wind turbines use massive turbine generator systems mounted on top of a tower. INVELOX, by contrast, funnels wind energy to ground-based generators. Instead of snatching bits of energy from the wind as it passes through the blades of a rotor, wind is captured with a funnel and directed through a tapering passageway that naturally accelerates its flow. This stream of kinetic energy then drives a generator that is installed safely and economically at ground level. – See more at: http://sheerwind.com/technology/how-does-it-work

Billboard in Peru Turns Air into Clean Drinking Water

Just outside Lima, Peru, a billboard provides drinking water to whomever needs it - producing water out of thin air for residents of the desert city.

The world has known jugs, taps, plants etc that are used to filter water, but imagine a 50 feet tall billboard on the main road that filters water for all of its adjacent area ? Yes, this has been made possible by the University of Engineering and Technology, Lima, Peru.

This billboard is capable of actually making 100 liters (26 gallons) of water everyday out of thin air (no its not a bank and no its not creating any paper currency but it’s much better than that). It works like this: the billboard is designed the way that it captures moisture from the air and puts it through a reverse osmosis system, turning it into drinking water which is then stored in 20 liter tanks. It is capable of providing drinking water for hundreds of families per month.

Originally it was designed by Lima’s University of Engineering and Technology as an advertisement for enrollment  the billboard works to overcome the lack of transportable water in the coastal desert. The resourceful design takes advantage of the atmospheric humidity of almost 98%, to counter the dangerously low annual rainfall (just over half an inch).

We all know that the government will not fund this but could this be the answer for other drought-stricken cities around the world? Can this be used in the deserts of Africa where many people die either because of the non-availability of water or because of the water born diseases? Can this method be used in cities and cosmopolitans where most of the tap water is fluoridated which is not only bad for health but also a reason for many diseases such as cancer.

City uproots couple’s 17-year-old front yard garden

Jennifer and Jason Helvenston of College Park, Orlando, Florida have been ordered by local officials to remove their front yard vegetable garden at a time when Orlando is touting its environmental credentials and reaching out to citizens for input on what additional steps the city could take to become one of greenest urban centers in the country (see the Mayor's youtube message on this here: http://youtu.be/Gl8EYCbJ-gg ).

They have begun collecting petition signature locally and we are calling on gardeners in other parts of the world to help Jason deliver a strong message that food gardens - both in front of homes and in back - are part of Orlando's and other cities' pathway to a healthy, green future.

Pole Shift: It Looks Like It’s Started

There are two types of pole shift. The terrestrial kind is where the land masses actually move from their current positions to new ones sometimes thousands of kilometers away. Then there’s magnetic pole shift, a flip in the earth’s magnetic field where the North and south Poles exchange places.

Adam Maloof, associate professor of geosciences at Princeton University has believed in terrestrial pole shift since his student days. Years of research has not fully proven that terrestrial pole shift does occur at all , but his research has shown there is no possible way it could happen the way he envisioned it would.

Maloof aired his theory on a National Geographic television program in 2009. The geological evidence discovered during the show found rocks in Australia that were ‘born’ thousands of miles away, and Maloof saw this as evidence of violent upheaval. The rocks had the ‘wrong’ polarity for their situation,. As a geologist he knew that rocks maintain their original polarity from the time they are pushed up from the bowels of the earth until they crumble away to dust millions of years later. Finding rocks that originated thousands of miles north on an island in the Southern Hemisphere offered further proof to him that his theories were correct.

Closer inspection presented him with a major problem though. There was no evidence of any violent upheaval, none, nothing at all to explain how the rocks had arrived in their current location. The pattern was repeated at other sites around the globe. He and his team turned up dozens of examples of rocks that just shouldn’t be where they were finding them. Rocks that originated near the North Pole were marooned in Australia and formations that were known for sure to have started their lives in the Sothern Hemisphere were now located thousands of miles to the north.
Maloof immediately concluded that a terrestrial pole shift couldn’t have happened …but that didn’t explain the out of place rocks.
After thinking about the issue for some time he hypothesized that terrestrial pole shift could occur after all, but on a scale so slow that we can’t feel it happening. You can hear his explanation on Listen To The story: Talk Of The Nation.
Many scientists do not follow his theory, preferring to believe that the rocks with opposing polarity just came up from the earth’s interior when the magnetic poles were in their opposite position, or that they arrived where they are due to continental drift.
Magnetic pole shift is a different thing entirely. The earth’s crust stays in place, there is no movement of rocks or anything else on the surface of the earth. What changes is the earth’s magnetic field.
The magnetic field around the earth is generated by the movement of molten iron in the outer core. When working properly it protects us from particle storms, cosmic rays,UV type B radiation  and subatomic particles flying in from deep space. Without it the ozone layer would be eroded, and we would be exposed to almost everything the universe has to throw at us.
Every few hundred thousand years the force of the magnetic field reduces until it is almost not there at all, and at this point the magnetic poles flip over, the poles exchange places. The geological record tells us that there have been many such reversals. The last one is thought to have happened about 780,000 years ago.
Our magnetic field has been weakening for 150 years now, but the weakening is not uniform. Professor Elgil Friis-Christensen former director of Denmark’s National Space Institute told the BBC
“We talk about the weakening of the global field but in some local areas, such as in the South Atlantic, the field has gone down 10% in just the last 20 years. But we do not know whether we will go into a reversal or whether the global field will recover,”
Pole shift is not synchronized, for a while we may have two, or more south poles, or north poles, as the field adjusts and settles into it’s new position. It’s a total unknown as to how long the planet would not have the shielding effects of the field.
No one has yet even guesstimated how long it takes to complete the reversal and for the field to return to normal operating levels.
The magnetic North Pole has been on the move for some time, moving from northern Canada towards Russia at a rate of 25-40 miles a year. The speed of movement has increased during the last decade. This increase coincides with the increase in the weakening of the field.
In an attempt to find out exactly what’s going on with the magnetic field The European Space Agency (Esa) launched three satellites on the back of a Rocot vehicle from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome at 12.02 GMT today.
The mission, called SWARM will monitor the field for between four and five years and hopefully gather enough data for the scientists to see clearly the state of the magnetic field.(source)
A magnetic pole reversal is going to present major problems.
Compasses will be pointing in the wrong direction and GPS satellites will quite literally not be able to work out up from down as they are programmed for our current polarity.
As humans were not around during the last reversal, the effect on animal life and climate is unknown. Will birds instinctively know that they should fly north for the winter…or do they still fly south?  Bees, bats and even mass migrations will most likely be affected.
Will the climate flip at the same time as the poles? Or does that come later?  There are so many answers that need to be found and scientists may not have that long to find them.
Magnetic pole shift is a complicated dynamic process. Although no land mass movement will occur we will still face a time of massive upheaval and uncertainty.
Our food supply is fragile at best, and massive environmental changes will be a challenge that needs to be overcome if we are to avoid a massive human die off.
Ozone, the filter that takes  out most ultraviolet B radiation, the type most harmful to human and animals will be depleted without the magnetic field there to protect it. Skin cancers and severe sunburn will increase. Cateracts and blindness will rise exponentially as the ozone reduces.
One thing we do have the answer to already is that scientists, and most likely politicians as well, are worried. Cash strapped, austerity driven Europe would not be spending tens of millions of dollars putting three satellites into space if they weren’t.
This is a situation we can do nothing about. Governments around the world know it’s coming but once again they say nothing. They give no advice about preparing for the future.
The magnetic field has been diminishing for years, and as time moves on the speed of that reduction increases.

Magnetic field strength is directly related to ozone.
Holes in the ozone allow warming of the oceans in those regions to occur.
Warmer oceans regions allow more precipitation and larger hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons to form.
All this crap we hear about climate change, the explanations about why some areas are experiencing warm seas and rising sea levels, it’s not climate change, it’s the start of magnetic pole shift.
Governments cannot admit this because there’s nothing they can do about it. Instead, they sell global warming in a miserable attempt to mitigate some of the changes that are already happening.

Colourful Solar Glass - Welcome To The Future

Colourful ‘solar glass’ means entire buildings can generate clean power

A solar power company capable of “printing” colourful glass that can generate electricity from the sun’s energy announced a £2m funding boost on Tuesday.

Oxford Photovoltaics, a spin-off from the University of Oxford, said the investment from clean-tech investors MTI Partners will help its solar glass, which can be dyed almost any colour, take a step closer to the commercial market.

“What we say here is rather than attach [solar] photovoltaics to the building, why not make the building the photovoltaics?” Kevin Arthur, the company’s founder and CEO, told the Guardian. “If you decide to build a building out of glass, then you’ve already decided to pay for the glass. If you add this, you’re adding a very small extra cost. [The solar cell treatment] costs no more than 10% of the cost of the facade.”

These generally cost between £600 and £1,000 per square metre, meaning the new cell treatment wouild cost just £60-£100 extra per square metre.

The technology works by adding a layer of transparent solid-state solar cells at most three microns thick to conventional glass, in order to turn around 12% of the solar energy received into low-carbon electricity. The power can then be exported to the national grid or used for the running of a building.

“Within reason we can print any colour, there’s a wide range of dyes, blues and greens and reds and so on. But different colours have different efficiencies: black is very high, green is pretty good and red is good, but blue is less good,” said Arthur.

The £2m investment will pay for equipment and recruiting staff for the company’s new base on the Begbroke Science Park near Oxford. The company is looking to build a much larger manufacturing facility next year, with full size panels available for sampling and trials at the end of 2014. A4-sized samples will be ready by the end of 2013. While the company is mostly targeting customers planning new buildings, it also “very interested” in retrofits on the facades of existing buildings.

Separately, a team at the University of Sheffield and University of Cambridge this week said they had succeeded in developing a process to ‘spray paint’ solar cells on to surfaces and, potentially in the future, roofs and buildings. The teams believe the process could significantly cut the cost of solar in the future, but currently only works on “very smooth” surfaces and is less efficient than conventional solar panels.

Professor David Lidzey from the University of Sheffield said: “Spray coating is currently used to apply paint to cars and in graphic printing. We have shown that it can also be used to make solar cells using specially designed plastic semiconductors. Maybe in the future surfaces on buildings and even car roofs will routinely generate electricity with these materials.”

Solar power worldwide reached 100GW installed capacity last year for the first time, up from 71GW in 2011 and just 40GW in 2010, according to recent trade body figures.
